Electron Microscopy Center in Institute of Marine Biology

Introduction

The Electron Microscopy (EM) Center in Institute of Marine Biology was established in 2001. The center offers the facilities and technical assistance to researchers to study the ultrastructure of biological samples. In the center, there are three microscope rooms and one preparing room for biological sample preparation. The facilities include a transmission EM, a scanning EM, and various indtruments for EM sample preparation.

Team Members

Director of the center: Dr. Jiann-Hong Leu, Associate Professor of Institute of Marine Biology

Manager: Mrs. Hsin-Yuan Chen, Administrative Executive Officer of Institute of Marine Biology

Instruments & services

Main Instruments:

  1. Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM, Hitachi HT-7700)

  2. Scanning Transmission Electron Microscope (STEM, Joel JEM 2010)

  3. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM, Hitachi S-2400)

  4. Ultramicrotome (Leica EM UC6)

  5. Critical Point Dryer (CPD, Hitachi HCP-2)

  6. Ion Sputter (Hitachi E101)

  7. Glass Knifemaker (Leica EM KMR2)

  8. Light Compound Microscope (Olympus) & Dissecting Microscope (Olympus)

Services:

1. The various instruments are open for users who have been trained and qualified by the center

2. The center offers EM-related courses for undergraduate and graduate students and for training and qualifying new users to use the instruments

3. The center provides consultation for EM-related study, such as assisting users in developing appropriate methods and protocols.

4. The center provides staff-operated services, including biological sample preparation (negative stain and conventional resin embedding/sectioning) and instrument operation.
